ARA-290, explained

An experimental peptide studied for small nerve fibers and nerve pain.

Selected phase 2 human studyRead the sources

What it’s used for

Small human study

Nerve pain

Symptom scores improved over 28 days in a 49-person diabetes trial.

Small human study

Nerve fibers

Nerve-fiber gains in the clear front of the eye mainly occurred in people who started with fewer fibers.

Reported topics

Inflammation

Reported research topics include colitis, rheumatoid arthritis and protection of transplant islet cells.

Cell and animal research

Tissue and heart research

Cell and animal work covers diabetic wounds, heart injury, aging hearts, stroke and brain injury.

What to expect

  1. Weeks 1–2

    Less pain and inflammation

  2. Weeks 2–4

Changes in nerve and tissue markers

  3. Weeks 4–6

    Peak response reported

  4. Months 2–6

    Effects reported to persist

Side effects & safety

Side effects

  • One trial participant stopped after kidney function worsened while their furosemide dose was raised; the cause is unclear

Stop and get help if

  • Severe inflammation at the injection site
  • Signs of an allergic reaction
  • New neurological symptoms
  • Changes in blood counts
  • The condition you're treating gets worse

Avoid or check first

  • Pregnant — safety is unknown

In sport

  • The reference reports: banned at all times.

How to mix5 steps
  1. Wipe both tops

Wash your hands, then swab both rubber vial tops with alcohol. Let them dry.

  2. Draw the water

Use a new sterile syringe to draw the water volume selected in the calculator.

  3. Run it down the wall

Introduce the water slowly down the inside glass wall, rather than directly onto the powder.

  4. Swirl, don’t shake

Gently swirl or roll the vial. Allow time for the powder to dissolve.

  5. Label the vial

Write the preparation date and the amount and final volume on the vial label.

Injecting under the skinWhere, rotating sites, which syringe

Where

Subcutaneous injections go into the fatty layer beneath the skin. Common sites include the abdomen, outer thigh and upper arm. Keep at least 5 cm from the navel and avoid bruised, irritated or damaged skin.

Rotate sites

Change the spot each time. Clean the skin and let it dry.

Single-use equipment

Use a new sterile needle and syringe each time. Place used needles in a sharps container.

Storage

Storage

Refrigerated. Reported period: 24 hours.

What the research says

Phase 2 · defined neuropathy population · 28 days of study treatment plus a month of follow-up

The question being studied

The study followed people with type 2 diabetes and painful nerve damage for 56 days: 28 days of treatment and a month of follow-up. It measured blood sugar, blood fats, nerve-symptom scores and nerve fibers in the clear front of the eye.

Questions

What does 10mg mean?

It describes an amount of material in the unit stated on the label. It does not describe liquid volume, a dose, or how to prepare the product.

Read more about amounts
Does purity mean it is sterile?

No. Purity and sterility require different tests. An endotoxin result also does not establish sterility.

About testing
Can I calculate concentration?

You need a mass in mg and either a final volume or a target concentration. IU and blends require separate, verified information.
